2 escape unhurt after plane burns on landing at Sussex Airport

A pilot and his passenger were unhurt Sunday when their plane caught fire and was destroyed shortly after landing at Sussex Airport in Wantage, authorities said.

The single-engine Cessna 210 landed about 2:45 a.m. and the fire was reported minutes later, according to New Jersey State Police.

Members of the Wantage Fire Department found the plane engulfed in flames on the runway, state police said.

The fire was quickly extinguished.

State police declined to identify the pilot or passenger.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating. However, a spokesperson could not be reached Monday for comment due to the federal government shutdown.

An airport official declined to comment.

On Jan. 7, a Cessna 172 crash-landed in a field while on approach to Sussex Airport. Two people aboard that plane were not hurt.
