WAYNE, Neb. (KCAU) — UPDATE (10 p.m.): One person is confirmed to have died as a result of a plane crash at Wayne Airport.

According to an update on the MayDay STOL Drag Races Facebook page, at around 6:45 p.m. a pilot crashed during their final approach during an apparent stall spin accident.

The release states that the pilot was the only one in the plane and the only casualty.

Out of respect for the privacy of the pilot’s family, the identity is currently not being released.

The NTSB and FAA are currently investigating the incident and the MayDay STOL Drag Race staff has said they will be providing full cooperation with authorities.

All upcoming events have been canceled.

The Wayne MayDay STOL Drag Races have canceled Friday night’s events.

According to their Facebook page, all events for Friday night have been canceled due to an undisclosed onsight incident.

It is encouraged that the area be avoided for the time being.

Observers at the scene tell KCAU 9 that a plane participating in an exhibition during Friday’s STOL Drag Races, which were put on hold due to wind, apparently stalled and crashed to the ground. One onlooker estimated the plane was about 100 feet in the air when it stalled and spun. This information is currently unconfirmed by officials.

A pilot we spoke with said these types of incidents are unusual.

Officials aren’t confirming any injuries at this time.
