ITV and Sky Sports were forced to issue an apology after broadcasting some choice language in the build-up to Newcastle's Carabao Cup final clash with Liverpool.

The Magpies are looking to end their 70-year wait for a domestic trophy with a win over Arne Slot's side this afternoon, with 32,000 supporters crammed into the Wembley bowl.

The Toon's last domestic trophy was a 3-1 win over Manchester City in the FA Cup back in 1955.

Black and white supporters made their voices heard ahead of kick-off, drowning out Liverpool supporters and Newcastle legends Shay Given and Les Ferdinand who were on punditry duty in the build-up to the game.

Both teams were welcomed out onto the pitch by an incredible atmosphere, with Newcastle fans occupying the west side of Wembley Stadium, Liverpool to the east.

Bruno Guimaraes gathered his players into a huddle ahead of kick-of for some final words of encouragement, just as Van Dijk did at the Liverpool end.

"We worked so hard to be here," Van Dijk said in the Reds huddle moments before kick-off as a camera was thrust into the middle of the Liverpool players.

He added: "Are we ready for the hard work? Let's f****** do it together!"

The broadcasters said sorry for the X-rated language used by the Liverpool captain, with lead commentator Peter Dury also apologising a couple of minutes into the game.

“Apologies if you picked up any bad language during the pent-up moment ahead of kick-off," Drury said.

Newcastle made a bright start to the game and looked well up for the final with Jacob Murphy firing over the bar inside the first 15 minutes or so.

It was a nervy affair for the first half-an-hour, with the scores level at the time of writing.
